Growing again.....

Since getting the last 3 chicks, we've both had the urge to get more chickens. I've watched Craigslist and have seen a few, but most have been too far away. I called on one last week for silkies, and never got a return call. I've been calling the two local TSC stores, and theirs aren't in yet. Then I find out that they have a minimum of 6,(we only want 3), and that you have to show id and sign for them. SIGN for a chick? WTH? No thanks. SO I find this ad on CL yesterday, make a call, and Lisa and I head out after she gets home from work. They listed a pretty good selection of breeds, and we set ourselves on Barred Rocks. We get there, go inside, and wow, these people have a really nice setup! Nice and clean, all covered & heated, indoors, very impressive. The man picks out 3 female BR's, and I ask Lisa if she wants more. She kinda hesitates and says "ok, one more", and picks out a Buff Orpington. Well.....I figure since I have a 10 on me, lets just go ahead and get just ONE more, lol, so I pick out a New Hampshire Red. Yep, here we come, back from Deerfield, with 5 more month old chicks.....didn't I say we only wanted THREE? lol I'll take full blame for that one, Lisa wanted to stop at 3.

So now, here's the list of our flock:3 Delewares, 5 Aricaunas, 3 Partridge Rocks, 1 Cochin Bantam, 1 New Hampshire Red, 1 Buff Orpington, and 3 Barred Rocks. We started with 3 last summer, now we're up to 17.

The new ones are downstairs in my room with a heat lamp until this weather breaks. There's still snow outside, and the forecast doesn't show warmer weather till next week. I plan on extending the chicken yard another 8-10 feet, and building another temporary tractor for these when they're ready to go outside. Just when I thought I could concentrate on the garden, lol.

Glad to finally hear from you. I was just reading about Aricaunas in that they lay blue-green eggs - that is so neat!!! Your chickies are ever so cute!! The speckled black ones are pretty too. Looking forward to your extended coop!...debbie

Who can concentrate during Spring on the farm? I currently am in the middle of: clearing the land for a greenhouse, getting a building ready for our new goats, getting seed ready for the greenhouse, chicks in the brooder, eggs in the bator, clearing winter trash, cutting fire wood.... I have farmer ADD...lol Don't we all? Good luck with the chickies!!

I can't seem to help acquiring a ridiculous number of chickens, either. Right now I have twenty five, and four newly hatched.
By the way, what on EARTH is the dead animal under your feet in the upper right corner of the blog? It looks like a collie dog, but I know that's not right.

Chicken fever happens to the best of us... I love, love LOVE my buff orpingtons. They are the sweetest, calmest chickens of the bunch. I'm on the hunt for Welsummers (dark chocolate eggs) and black aricunas (sp?)

I am really having to curb my chick fever! I have eggs due to hatch next week in the incubator, but without any way to candle or anything. I hope they are growing well, but the wait is killing me! If they don't work out, I'm going to the feed store and getting some babies!
